The 9-11 Memorial Quilt Project

Nashville, July 2004

On July 1, 2004, four of the five quilts made their first public appearance at a mall in Nashville, Tennessee. Visitors included a Tennessee stitcher who found her own square on the quilts, and a trauma nurse who said the quilts were a fitting tribute to those lost. The trip also included a visit to The Stitching Post, a local needlework shop.

Photos from the visit

In the mall the quilts lay flat on the floor inside a rope barrier, and visitors walked around them.

These photos were taken on the trip and posted on the project’s own site, and were recovered from the Internet Archive. Names come from the old captions. Every effort is being made to preserve the historic significance of this project, though we will respect credible requests to remove a photo. If you are in one of them, contact us.

The quilts came back to Nashville the next summer, for a showing at the Opryland Hotel on August 19–21, 2005. See the full timeline.
